Alain Amouyal - Frames for a Fairy Tale

Alain Amouyal - Frames for a Fairy Tale (Symphony for London Symphony Orchestra and London Voices)

1 Temptation (7:59)
2 Dance (12:04)
3 Hope (5:14)
4 March (4:34)
5 Liberation (8:54)
6 Certainty (15:16)

The suite "Frames for a Fairy Tale" for orchestra, voice and piano, is the first stage of a grand multimedia show bringing together different forms of art, such as choreography and virtual images...

The principal theme, which is at present the object of a theatrical treatment, is the battle of Orpheus to win again his Beloved.

It is a fresco, a great epic which relies on the story of the mythical couple, but also coincides with the life experience of the composer since the story is, as all great legends are, without age.

John Debney - SCORPION KING (Expanded)

Compositional brilliance this score ain't. An exciting and melodic listening experience? Rather! That is one of the reasons this score is addictive; its just so damn gripping!

Composer John Debney's excellent Scorpion King score celebrates the chord progression typical of Egyptian orchestral music and fuses this with hard rock instrumentation. Setting off from Waxman' excellent Taras Bulba, Debney has composed some muscular, tense and exciting scherzos with colourful woodwind flourishes and heavy percussion to boot!

The sections of the score with Ravelian / Orffian chanting chorus are really fun to listen to. Many cues in this score, including the extra material, boasts some gorgeous majestic choir and female wailing vocals to accompany more of the fast string writing. Without a doubt the orchestra, from snare drum to French Horn, and singers work very hard in the final tracks as the entire mix is thrown in at a maniacal tempo. Enjoy this harmonic and chaotic epic.

James Horner - LEGENDS OF THE FALL (Complete score) - 2 CD

Composer James Horner may have penned his most majestic, beautiful and masterful opus on this one. The vivid interpretations performed by the London Symphony Orchestra have, to my mind, supplanted this work at the top of the finest autumnal tone poems.

For those of you who enjoy touching, dense and highly melodic orchestral music; look no further. James Horner has composed well over 90 minutes of gorgeous and emotive music that will carry you off to the sun setting alluvial plains of autumn landscapes. At times, there are incredibly powerful crescendos where the orchestra joins the string and oboe soloists with shakuhachi to create truly dramatic and emotional pieces. These concert structured sections of the score are simply mesmerising for the heart. The scherzos, although few, are rousing and gripping; rooted in traditional romantic structure. You will love them.

James Horner weaves powerful textures with the string and woodwind sections that would leave even Arnold Bax proud. Hope you enjoy this gorgeous symphonic work.

Hans Zimmer & Gavin Greenaway - THE PEACEMAKER (Complete Score Sessions) - 2 CD

Here we have, what I believe to be, an extremely misunderstood and underrated score. This could be one of modern composer Hans Zimmer's finest and interesting unreleased scores. Its a great Soviet Union forerunner to his Gladiator opus. This saw the first thorough utilisation of a revamped studio, new sampling stations, mods and the best digital music software money can buy.

The digital Russian choir, sampled from the finest choral libraries, demonstrates how far Zimmer came since his first Roland MSQ700. This wonderfully long score encompasses a large orchestra of 100 plus musicians. Real musicians, not digital! Although Zimmer lovingly mixes digital sounds, samples and live recordings into huge and powerful soundscapes.

There is an abundance of new mystical and dark choral music in this edition which is brilliant. There is also a lot more interesting percussion, propulsive strings, digi brass fanfares, synth washes, more of the Macedonian wailing vocals and East European mandolin (I think its a mandolin sample but it could be a yan sing).

Included in this 2 hour plus edition is the suites produced for the official album and the entire score recording sessions. There are also three alternates, one of them a quarter of an hour long.

Hans Zimmer & Jeff Rona - THE FAN - Complete

Contemporary and hallucinogenic, this totally unreleased score is very interesting. Sporting touching, dreamy string synths and hard industrial percussion this score is a volatile blend of symphonic Nine Inch Nails and relaxation music with a thematic base. There are guitar, vocals and synth swashes of industrial beat tension throughout. It might not be to everyone’s taste, but its cool as hell!

David Newman - BILL & TED I & II (Complete Recordings)

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure score & Bogus Journey Score (Complete recordings) - David Newman

Thought I would upload something different. Something hard to find and, of course, unreleased. An underrated score indeed. The producer of this album has done a nice job.

If you enjoy chorus, then special attention should be paid to track 6 (Heaven) - A six minute andante for large female and children’s choir. It’s just a magnificent piece of celestial tonality, in parts it reminds me of Rautavaara's 'angel' works, but without the dissonance..and er..with choir!? There are many other chorale delights in the surrounding tracks with gusto on the misterioso strings.

Track 8 (Meeting your Fears) has some pretty blasting brass work. Those (maybe piccolo or muted) trumpet players must have been on cocaine. Brilliant stuff throughout the score.

The Bogus Journey score is detailed, experimental (albeit traditionally crafted) and very harmonic. David Newman has composed and orchestrated some really nice pieces for the Excellent Adventure score also though.

There is lots of Waltonesque pomp and circumstance throughout many of the Excellent Adventure score tracks, but composer Newman injects a lot more colour into his pieces. Generally, all the music is good in this score. Perhaps its just more low key than the Bogus Journey score. However, there are some great heroic fanfares that even Tchaikovsky would have put into his Capriccio Italien I imagine.

Oh, and there is the gay disco rock segments mixed in accordingly for the period the scores were penned. However, they are only a few seconds here and there. Overall, the scores are nice examples of orchestral fun and choral majesty.

Danny Elfman - PLANET OF THE APES (Complete Recording Sessions) - 2 CDs

This is the percussion concerto to top them all. Danny Elfman uses an astonishing range of sounds from his personal assortment of digital, traditional and experimental instruments. The score is solidly backed by a large orchestra, primarily woodwind by the sounds of it, with a small string section.

This score demonstrates Elfman's skill for strident orchestral writing at its best. The orchestrations are dense and noble. The percussive sections are dynamic, imaginative and diverse. There are some nice pieces for dudak, flute and choir (digital I think) to be found in the reflective cues of the extra material.

The propulsive nature of the compositions really gets your heart pounding on many occasions, especially when the aggressive low brass joins in. There are many cadenzas throughout this rhythmic score, ignited by tribal flourishes and hard brass sections. The edged sounds of marimbas hit with hard mallets, gongs, gamelin, cymbals, taiko drums and tom toms will drive your neighbours insane on first listen. This score is masculine and complex, but bares many fruits on repeated listens.

You will find many goodies in this music, especially in the new material. There are some nice moody pastoral and misterioso moderatos throughout the score, but the best parts are the 'action' sections. The player's enthusiasm shines through when the whole mix gets put together - Orchestra and Percussion.

The sound of these recording sessions is high quality throughout. No sfx. Some may find the volume is a little lower in places, but it's nothing too drastic. Link in comments. Enjoy.

Danny Elfman - RED DRAGON (Complete Recordings) - 3 CD

What a dense score! Most of the cues in this score are written in post-minimalist symphonic style. Composer Danny Elfman writes music that’s right up there with the 'modern' works of Vasks and Partch. The music is broad, expansive and sometimes even operatic. This score is soooo cold, yet there is a small inner core of romanticism.

The disconcerting repeated string phrases with support from low playing brass and percussion is as effective as ever. Lots of low pitch! There is some nice jumpy fugue writing all over the score too! Both modal and repetitive in parts (at least it gives that impression), Elfman carries the listener through plenty of interesting peaks and troughs. Some of the pieces remind me, personally, of parts of the works of Satie, Herrmann, Prokofiev, Bartok or even Lutoslawski. It’s all classic Elfman at the end of the day of course. Original and great stuff.

There is a lot of music on this edition of the score, some of which extends and develops the same thematic compositions. However, some of the cues are real hidden gems; Some incredibly layered and cacophonous pieces, some heart-aching and some disturbing. A lot of this score can be heavy and bleak, but it’s always a very interesting and powerful listening experience.

This is a 3 CD edition which has been spread over two folders for technical and cue sheet continuity.

Danny Elfman - DOLORES CLAIBORNE (Complete)

What can I say? Without a doubt, this is an incredible score, both in emotional content and musical craftsmanship.

Sadly, the commercial release is only 30 minutes long. This edition is over an hour long and includes every note recorded by composer Danny Elfman for the score. This version of the score feels much more consistent and developed. This edition even includes an extended 'Eclipse' track. Gorgeous. There is some new expressionistic music, with incredible brass playing, in 'Vera's Death' and 'Ouch'. All the new tracks will tug at your emotions with the mournful legato string work.
The compositional structure in this score is brilliant. Its mostly just repeated phrases, but it’s really effective. The string section is layered thick and sorrowful. So much of this music will impress you because it really grabs at your heart strings and it has a hallucinogenic quality to it.

Enjoy! Please do leave a comment when picking up link. Let me know what YOU think of the music. Cheers.

Elliot Goldenthal - TITUS (Complete) - 2CD

Outstanding classical composer Elliot Goldenthal does it again with this excellent score, Titus.

There is a lot of rock, jazz and dance fusion in the mix which makes it interesting. There is plenty of evidence of Goldenthal's fascination with Rachmaninov, Lizst and Wagner; but at the end of the day the music is classic Goldenthal; his unique liturgical style, syncopated brass, complex chord progression and ironic use of counterpoint. He deserves his place amoungst, if not at the top, of the league of his post-modern peers - Corigliano, Glass and Takemitsu.

Anyone who enjoys big, bold and powerful choir pieces will love the additional material.

John Ottman - FANTASTIC FOUR (Complete) - 2CD

Me dont like dis musica!!! However, I have been asked many times to put it up. So here it is friends!

It's traditionally written, which makes a nice break from the usual electronic nonsense getting released these days. Shame that there is too much unison writing and some very very simplistic compositions. If this was released 20 years ago it would have been canned before even being orchestrated. However, Ottman's use of wordless choir in some tracks is really powerful. The string and brass vivace sections are catchy and do make your adrenaline rush, so Ottman has got the tempo mastered nicely. Bottom line? This is orchestral candyfloss, but also, like Superman Returns; a great example of tonality and harmony. Additionally, there are a couple of catchy tunes and notes of dissonance to keep the variety going.

This is the 2-CD limited edition. Once again, there is a lot of extra music, including some nice alternative recordings.

Silvestri has used his usual blend of ostinato strings, smashing percussion, blaring brass and propulsive rhythms in the wood wind sections. The score has been orchestrated to sound very operatic and some of the string writing in sections of the score is really well crafted.
There are even some contemporary sounding nocturnes in here. Some people have said to me that they felt Silvestri leans a little to heavily on dense percussion at times, which is a shame because it drowns out a lot of the presto string sections. The dance beats that accompany the propulsive chants of the Hollywood Chorale actually work really well and will get your heart pounding. The dolente choir passages are often outstanding and when the female chorus emphasise their voce di petto, such as in the Finale tracks, you really feel some hairs raised.

The original release was only 43 minutes long. There is a LOT of extra music here, and most of it certainly adds to the mix.

The music is fun, operatic and loud, with a touch of campy gothique. Enjoy.
